Marrakech Creative Interiors Cluster

Giving a network of Marrakech artisans and design companies one public name, one presence and a reason to work together.

Nizzar Ben Chekroune led branding and digital strategy for the Marrakech Creative Interiors Cluster from May 2015 to June 2019, as UNIDO's Cluster Development Agent in Marrakech within the Creative Mediterranean programme. The cluster went on to report 30 additional jobs, a reported €26K increase in direct sales, institutional support for a Marrakech Design Hub and collective participation at COP22 and Maison & Objet.

Many workshops, one name

The cluster brought together artisans and creative interiors companies in Marrakech. Before the cluster, many of them worked side by side without cooperating. My part of the UNIDO mission, on this record, was the brand and the digital strategy: a name, an identity and a presence that buyers, institutions and partners could recognise as one entity.

That is a different problem from branding a company. A collective brand has no single owner and no single product. It has to give independent makers a reason to stand under the same name.

Craft without folklore

Marrakech carries a strong image of craft, and that image is both an asset and a trap. A cluster brand that leans on postcards sells heritage as decoration. One that erases it loses the reason buyers come to Marrakech in the first place.

I read the cluster's value as the meeting point: inherited gestures applied to contemporary interiors. The identity, the content and the public moments had to show that meeting point, so the cluster could stand next to design, not only next to souvenirs.

Where the cluster appeared

The cluster had its presentation film and its public moments in the city and beyond: Minyadina at COP22 in Marrakech, ARGANE #1 with its vernissage, a workshop crossing electronics, craft and design at the Emerging Business Factory, and collective participation at Maison & Objet. In parallel, La Minute Créative made individual makers visible, one film at a time.

Each of these moments put the cluster in front of a different audience: international visitors and delegations at COP22, buyers and specifiers at Maison & Objet, the local art and design public at a vernissage. The name and the identity had to hold in all of those rooms.

What moved

The cluster reported 30 additional jobs, a €26K increase in direct sales, institutional support for the Marrakech Design Hub and cooperation between companies that had previously worked apart. Collective participation is a brand result in itself: companies that had worked apart agreed to appear together, under one name, in front of international buyers. These are cluster-level results reported by the programme. My contribution was the brand, the digital strategy and the visibility that carried the cluster into those rooms.

The regional programme figures across seven countries sit on the UNIDO case, and they are the programme's, not mine.

What I take forward

I can give a collective of independent makers one public identity and treat that identity as an economic instrument, measured by jobs, sales and cooperation rather than by how the logo looks.
