In 2019 I sat on the Hult Prize jury for students from FSTG Marrakech and mentored them on their marketing strategies.
The two roles pull in different directions. A judge scores what is in front of him; a mentor works on what it could become. Mentoring on marketing meant pushing students past the description of their idea to the questions that decide whether it reaches anyone: who it is for, why they would care, how they would hear of it. Judging meant holding the same students to that standard.
It ran in parallel with my role on the USAID Career Centers, where I was already connecting students with the working economy.
What I take forward
I hold the same standard whether I am helping build an idea or judging it.
